What is a Legal Nurse Consultant (LNC)?
A Legal Nurse Consultant is a registered nurse who uses their clinical expertise and specialized legal training to consult on medical-related legal cases. LNCs bridge the gap between medicine and law by evaluating, analyzing, and delivering opinions on healthcare-related legal issues.

What services does a Legal Nurse Consultant provide?

  • A range of services, including:

  • Reviewing and interpreting complex medical records

  • Screening cases for merit

  • Identifying standards of care and deviations

  • Assisting with discovery and depositions

  • Conducting medical literature research

  • Preparing chronologies and demonstrative evidence

  • Consulting or serving as expert witnesses

  • Assisting in case preparation and trial strategy

  • Identifying and retaining expert witnesses

What types of cases do Legal Nurse Consultants work on?
LNCs work on a variety of cases, including medical malpractice, personal injury, professional liability, product liability, toxic tort, workplace injury, and nursing home litigation. Both plaintiff and defense law firms utilize LNC services.

Do Legal Nurse Consultants only work for attorneys?
No. While many LNCs consult for attorneys, they may also work with insurance companies, healthcare organizations, government agencies, and risk management departments.

What is involved in screening a malpractice case?
Screening involves evaluating the presence of four elements: duty, breach of duty, causation, and damages. The LNC reviews medical records for these elements and offers an opinion on the merits of the case.
